Have you heard about A Day, 15th May 2012?

The A Day project is a unique inclusive single day photographic project involving professional, semi-professional and amateur photographers around the World creating a web resource, especially for education, and exhibitions. Check out the website here.

More info….

The project is run by the Expressions of Humankind Foundation is a not-for-profit Foundation in Stockholm, created to support scientific research and education around the photographic image.

It’s a structured project so photographs uploaded can be based around certain themes which have been developed with the Scientific and research council, headed by professor Harriet Wallberg Henriksson, president of the Karolinska Institutet University.

Prominent people supporting the initiative include president Mary Robinson, Nobel Laureate Martti Ahtisaari, Deputy Secretary General of the UN, Jan Eliasson, and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Tutu is very supportive and says:

“Photography is a wonderful thing – pictures transcend the barriers of language, age, gender and culture. If we are to improve understanding between people, it is important that we share the way we live and who we are. Take this unique opportunity with me and thousands of others around the world to create a priceless collection of images, to boost understanding and enhance research and education. This project is exciting, significant and truly exhilarating.”

30 World Press photo winners have signed up

One thousand images will also be selected for inclusion in a global exhibition and a book that will be published in at least ten countries.

CTSP would like to send a huge congratulations to our Lecturer Ilan Godfrey who has won Open Photo 2012! Read up and see images from ‘Legacy of the mine’ here.

“With the discovery of gold in the late 1800’s the unrelenting growth of the mine spread across South Africa. Resulting in extreme wealth for the few, exploitation and suffering for the majority and environmental implications we are now seeing the affects of. South Africa is no longer the leading supplier of gold and falls behind China, Australia and the U.S.A. However South Africa is still recognized globally for its abundance of mineral resources and is one of the leading producers of gold, diamonds, base metals and coal.

Mining, a key factor in the development and shaping of the landscape has brought about national economic growth. The mining industry, the largest industrial sector in South Africa, employs an estimated half a million people. Yet the legacy of the mine is prevalent in all aspects of South African society. Environmental and social impacts of mining bring with it major risks. Benefits are not always equitably shared and local communities living near mineral development suffer the most.”
