MASTERCLASS IN DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY

We take pleasure in announcing the 2012 NOOR-Nikon Masterclass in Documentary Photography to be held in South Africa at the Cape Town School of Photography (CTSP) from 26th-30th March 2012.

The annual motivational masterclass series is supported by the NOOR Foundation and Nikon Europe BV and designed to encourage the development of documentary photographers from emerging markets all over the world. Founded four and a half years ago, NOOR is based in the Netherlands and with the support of Nikon Europe, hosted the first masterclass in Lagos in 2009. The project was supported by the Nigerian Institute of Journalism and 15 documentary photographers from seven surrounding countries participated. In 2010 the workshop was held in St Petersburg, Russia in collaboration with Foto Departament, and last year it was held in Bucharest with the organizational support of the Eidos Foundation and Nikon Rumania.

The 2012 masterclass will select 15 photographers to join a one-week intensive workshop in Cape Town. The team of lecturers facilitating the masterclass include Kadir van Lohuizen, Andrea Bruce, Francesco Zizola and NOOR project co-coordinator, Claudia Hinterseer. The Project co-ordinator in South Africa is Sandra Maytham-Bailey.

Applications are now open to young and aspiring documentary photographers and photojournalists who are South African or are from the SADC (Southern African Development Community) region with a valid passport. We look forward to your application.

DSLR HD Video Workshop

We are pleased to present an exciting new workshop on high definition video skills. If you are interested in exploring the HD video feature on your DSLR camera, then this three week beginners’ workshop is for you. The course will teach you how to operate the HD video feature and get the results you want. You will be taught basic filming and lighting techniques, as well as movie clip editing in iMovie for MAC and Movie Maker for those using PC. There are many other editing suites available, but we have elected to use freeware in order to make the course accessible to all. The skills learnt in this workshop can be easily applied to other editing software.

Boudoir shoots have become quite a popular service for ladies who want to do something out of the ordinary for their loved one or …herself!

Join this exciting new workshop where photography expert, Jules Morgan, will share tips on how to relax people and discuss different posing ideas especially angles that flatter people. Learn how to create desirable portraits, using natural light and create great compositions using different locations.

Enjoy the rest of the workshop by putting the theory to practice with our gorgeous model and Jules will demonstrate her shooting process while giving any practical advice when required.

Beauty Portraiture Workshop

Explore the world of beauty portraiture with internationally recognized photographer Brett Florens who will present a 2 day workshop on Elinchrom lighting units. The course will involve practical demonstrations of both studio (indoor) and location (outdoor) shooting. You will work with professional models to create beauty portraits and receive constructive feedback on your work.

Session 1: Students can look forward to an initial presentation on Florens’ work, process and shooting gear followed by three practical demonstrations illustrating varied applications of light, within the portraiture genre.

Session 2: The second half of this workshop will, after a brief demo by Florens, require students to shoot three different models, under different lighting and set conditions. Images will be submitted for feedback from Brett during the last hour.

Digital Compact

This fun and interactive course is designed for those who want to take better digital photographs with their compact camera. We will discuss camera settings and functions as well as address resolution, exposure, the visual effects of aperture and shutter, shooting modes, light, flash, composition, transferring images from camera to computer, emailing and printing digital files and visual literacy.

This entry level course combines theory and practice enabling you to take better digital photographs with your digital SLR camera by increasing your theoretical understanding of photography and exploring your creative side. The course covers camera anatomy, resolution, and exposure, visual effects of the aperture and shutter, lenses, flash, composition, basic photo editing and aims to further develop your visual literacy. The course concludes with the exhibition of your strongest work.

DSLR Advanced

Light is the raw ingredient of every photograph. Having a good understanding of how light behaves and how to use it in a way that best suits your photographs can add a whole new dimension to your images. The new DSLR Advanced course is built around a foundation of understanding light and how to work with it. Starting from the general characteristics of available light, and covering topics such as light painting, flash and lighting for challenging subjects, the course teaches a variety of easily accessible approaches to lighting your photographs. Each week’s session includes a practical demonstration on how to implement a specific approach to lighting. The weekly projects will pair these approaches with appropriate photographic genres.

Wedding Workshop

Wedding photography has changed. Gone are the days of the posed, formal wedding album. The new style of wedding photography is fresh, natural and documentary.

This workshop is designed to equip you with all the know how to shoot a modern wedding.

Included in the course fee:

3 x 3 hour lectures covering pre-production, equipment, lighting, marketing & costing and initial presentation to clients.
A half day wedding shoot at a city location, starting with bridal and groom preparations in the bridal suite, and ending with spontaneous couple portraits against our cityscape.
A further 3 hour lecture on post-production, how to make image choices, different options on album presentation.
A professionally printed 24 page photobook of your best images from the shoot, which you can use as part of your wedding portfolio.

You will work with a professional wedding photographer, and expert on light and flash and a photoshop and lightroom lecturer to cover all the relevant aspects of wedding photography.
