Entrance Requirements

First year students are required to submit an application form together with a letter of motivation and 5 photographs. Students are encouraged to meet us and visit the school for an interview. Applicants for the full-time course must have passed Grade 12. Since classes are kept small, students are encouraged to submit applications for 2012 by the end of October 2011. However, we continue to accept applications until the places available are filled.

Equipment Requirements

  • 35mm single lens reflex digital camera body, with 18-55mm lens. A 55-200mm lens is recommended.
  • A tripod and external hard-drive.
  • Students who do not yet have camera equipment are welcome to speak to us about advice on purchasing. 
  • All printing and mounting costs will be for the student's account. It is important to budget for this.

A Career in Photography

Cape Town School of Photography has offered part-time photographic courses for 10 years.  This year we extended our teaching to include a full-time course. The first year is an intensive beginner course. In their second year, students can choose to focus on commercial photography or documentary and fine art photography. The 2 year programme has a strong emphasis on hands-on learning and building technical expertise. At the same time, students are also taught visual literacy and history of photography. We aim to develop thinking and creative photographers who are technically competent.

Course outcomes

In addition to the knowledge and experience students gain on the course, on completion of the full-time 2 year programme the student will leave with the following tools for starting a career in photography:

  • A comprehensive portfolio of work in the field of their choice
  • A business plan
  • Exhibition experience
  • An online presence

Course duration

The course is a full-time 2 year programme. However, students can choose to leave after the first year. Admission to the second year of study is dependent on submission of a portfolio of work.
