Second Year Curriculum

The second year programme builds on the first year curriculum with the intention of further developing photographic skills linked to both technical challenges and different working environments.  The course consists of three components:

  • Short 2-3 week modules
  • Personal Project
  • Professional Practice

The 2-3 week modules give students the opportunity to revisit particular technical aspects of photography learnt in the first year by answering challenging briefs linked to specific contexts and markets.   Students will also be introduced to new photographic skills including shooting on medium format cameras, video, calibration, professional digital printing and alternative processes. The modules, taught by lecturers with both teaching and professional experience, include technical demonstrations and assistance with concept development and workflow management.

Professional Practice prepares students for the working world and exposes them to the many aspects of what it takes to run a photographic business. In addition to formal classes where the content is taught and assignments are given, students are also required to work shadow or assist working photographers.  The school facilitates this process but the student is responsible for finding work experience related to their interests.  It is critical that students build contacts and gain experience in introducing themselves to people in the industry.

The personal project runs throughout the year and culminates in a large single body of work or two smaller projects.  The intention is give students the opportunity to work on a long-term body of work that is self-driven and allows them the freedom to experiment and find their own unique approach to photography.

Course outcomes:
