The first year is an intensive course aimed at beginner and intermediate photographers. The course aims to equip students with sound technical knowledge and experience, as well as challenge them creatively and conceptually in their approach to image making. There are four subjects that run throughout the year which are Practical Photography, Visual Literacy, Creative Process and History of Photography. In the final term, the additional subject of Professional Practice is taught. The first year curriculum includes the following:
- Camera operation and technical theory
- Digital imaging skills with a focus on image production, correction, manipulation and output
- Traditional film processing and printing
- Additional darkroom techniques including pinhole photography
- Photographic lighting, including available light, studio lighting and location lighting techniques
- Digital asset management using relevant software
- Technical and theoretical exploration of various photographic genres such as portraiture, documentary and landscape
- Editing and curating of images for presentation and exhibition
- Exposure to current debates and influences on photography
- Guest speakers and visits to exhibitions
- A broad understanding of local and international photography
- Creative process development and using photography as a means of personal expression
- A Professional Practice module designed to introduce students to the business aspects of the photographic market
