EIGHT 3-hour sessions completed over EIGHT weeks
This advanced course is aimed at experienced students having mastered all basic skills and wishing to develop a creative committed working practice within a documentary context. Students will be introduced to current creative aspects of image development and narrative processes internationally. The course will help students to critically engage with their images and the potential progression of their projects. Students will become more acquainted with the use of their work in varied arenas for communication, for example the walls of a gallery or the pages of a book or magazine.
Students will be guided through the process as they develop their own documentary portfolio piece and gain valuable insight into navigating the industry of documentary photography. Throughout the eight-week course practical sessions and excursions will be incorporated where required. Students will be expected to produce work on weekly bases, in relation to the development of their personal projects and the creation of new work.
Classes
The course combines theory lectures, demonstrations and slide shows with practical discussions and critiques. The course is presented in weekly sessions of 3 hours each, over a period of 8 weeks. Students are expected to complete a number of practical assignments in their own time.
Needs
To do this course you need a digital or analog SLR camera. Any other modes of image making; pinhole, vintage and Lomographic cameras are also welcome.
Costs
R3 400 (includes tuition and lecture notes). Students are expected to bear their own printing costs.
