There are stories all around us. Some poignant, some personal, some ‘make a difference’ and some are just beautiful. The documentary course offered at CTSP endeavours to guide photographers towards developing a narrative for a story they wish to tell.  On the course, you will unravel the techniques and approaches to documentary story telling. You will be exposed to the work of other photographers and their process as well as debate important issues such as truth, objectivity, subjectivity, ethics as well as tips to navigating the industry of a documentary photography.

Students will be expected to produce work on a weekly basis and ultimately a documentary portfolio piece for exhibition. The eight-week course combines theory and critical feedback of work produced outside of class time.

• To develop an understanding of the documentary process
• To find and explore a story you wish to tell visually
• To produce a body of work for a documentary portfolio

The course is facilitated by Samantha Reinders. Samantha is an award-winning photographer and multimedia producer currently based in Cape Town, South Africa – pursuing stories here and abroad.

Students are encouraged to explore various formats whilst responding to a selection of project briefs and may choose to work digitally, on film, in black-and-white or colour.

Course material includes presentations on the work of contemporary photographers, with reference to the history and development of the representation of land, the body, portraiture and documentary photography.
