Laugh it Off (LiO) has used humor to comment on the absurdity of everyday South African life since its inception in the 1990’s. The chosen method of the collective has always been satire, particularly by spoofing brand logos on t-shirts. For the retrospective, we invited artists to respond to the LiO tradition by engaging contemporary social and political issues. The result is a montage of genres, ranging from documentary and product photography to illustration and painting, that collectively comment on a socio-political moment different from, and in some ways the same as, when LiO first won their constitutional court battle against South African Breweries in 2005.

The newly commissioned work will be interspersed with existing work from the LiO archives.
