Hone the Light

This course aims to develop a broad and nuanced understanding of the raw material of the photographic image: Light.

Through theory classes, demonstrations, workshops, and structured practical projects students will explore the opportunities presented by working with different kinds of light sources and in different lighting environments.

Participants will learn how to identify and manipulate the key technical characteristics of light, starting with assignments that encourage observation and awareness of available light and progressing through more complex lighting scenarios to applications allowing complete control of every aspect of the light in a scene.

Structure

From 13:00 – 16:00 on Tuesdays.

Participants will need to complete homework projects in their own time.

Outcomes

On completing this course, participants will:

  • Have an in-depth understanding of the useful fundamental characteristics of Light
  • Be able to photograph with available window light
  • Be able to work with Flash
  • Play with Light using various light sources
  • Be introduced to Studio Lighting
  • Partake in a Studio Lighting Workshop

Our course caters to the enthusiastic beginner to intermediate level photographer and takes a varied approach to teach the fundamental concepts of Photography.

Through a combination of theory classes, online resources, supervised practice sessions, and assignments, students learn both the theory and practical application of photographic techniques to take stunning images. 

An introduction to visual literacy supplements the taught technical skills which, in turn, support the comprehensive lecturer feedback provided on submitted practical work.
